This is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany. Once a free imperial city,
lies at the intersection of the Romantic Road and the Castle Road (Burgenstraße). In the Holy Roman
Empire of the German Nation, a free imperial city was under direct control of the emperor,
meanwhile other cities belonged to a territory governed by one of many princes.
